Typically the Cardinals promote from within the organization or bring in a former player; they did neither today in hiring Mike Maddux as the new pitching coach. Maddux began his major league coaching career with the Milwaukee Brewers, coaching pitchers such as Ben Sheets and C.C. Sabathia. “During this time, the Brewers yielded an average of 77 fewer runs per season than they had in the previous seven”
He then went on to Coach for the Texas Rangers, improving their ERA by almost a full point. The accolades could go on, but in summary, Mike Maddux has had success wherever he has gone. Young arms such as Luke Weaver and Alex Reyes should greatly benefit from Maddux’s teachings.
Maddux is known for his no-nonsense approach to coaching, which should bring a much-needed culture change for the St. Louis Cardinals. The days of pitchers stacking cups in the dugout during their off days may be over, but a new structured pitching regime headed up by Maddux might be just what the Cardinals need to avoid mediocrity again in 2018.
