It turns out the four man Tampa Bay Rays rotation won’t start off as planned. Rays announce that Nathan Eovaldi will have surgery on his shoulder. He was out all of last season recovering from Tommy John. This surgery won’t be as complex and he is expected to be back potentially in June. The Rays say, Eovaldi’s arm structure is fine but rather it’s an arthroscopic surgery to remove some foreign bodies. Austin Pruitt was recalled to take Nathan Eovaldi’s spot on the opening day roster. It is unclear if Pruitt will start. Jacob Faria will move up a day the rotation with him now being the third starter and after him will be the bullpen day and then the fifth starter.
Nathan Eovaldi has a great spring in 16 ⅔ innings he had one walk and 14 strikeouts. He was a bright spot in the rotation. Brent Honeywell, the top prospect of the Rays, is out for the season with Tommy John and so is Jose De Leon also is out the season as he has undergone the same procedure. So the depth could be tested.
The Rays added starting pitchers Yonny Chirinos and Ryan Yarbrough to the opening day roster with the intentions of pitching out of the bullpen along with Matt Andriese. Also a slight potential Anthony Banda gets called up to make a start.
